In the UK, medical cannabis can be supplied legally when it is prescribed as a cannabis-based product for medicinal use (a CBPM). Since 1 November 2018, qualifying CBPMs have been placed in Schedule 2, which means they can be prescribed and supplied under controlled conditions.

The key condition is the prescription. UK rules restrict the decision to prescribe CBPMs to doctors on the GMC Specialist Register. In practice, that usually means a specialist consultation (often done remotely), followed by a prescription where appropriate.

Once prescribed, supply works like other controlled medicines: it is dispensed through a pharmacy and can be delivered to you by courier. Many CBPMs are “unlicensed specials”, which are still lawful to supply when ordered for an individual patient and sourced through properly licensed manufacturers and suppliers.
